American Red Cross President and CEO Gail McGovern visited the Eastern Massachusetts region to visit Red Cross boosters and to support one of the largest blood drives in the nation.
McGovern spoke at a reception in Boston Sept. 10, with board members, donors and volunteers, celebrating the work of our volunteers locally, and our response to the national call for support during Hurricane Isaac. After being introduced by Regional CEO Jarrett Barrios, McGovern saluted the efforts here and nationwide to reduce overhead and refocus the mission on alleviating suffering.
That was the warm-up for Sept. 11, where, after a breakfast with corporate leaders hosted by the Blue Cross Blue Shield Foundation, McGovern toured Fenway Park and the Day of Remembrance blood drive hosted by the American Red Cross and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.
Hundreds of donors rolled up their sleeves to donate blood, red blood cells and platelets, and tour demonstrations of Red Cross programs, including a CPR/AED demonstration performed to the tune of Staying Alive.
