The American Red Cross of Cortland County has selected Agnes Shaver and Nancy Albro as Volunteers of the Month for September 2013.
The Volunteer of the Month program, sponsored by Dunkin’ Donuts, recognizes dedicated Red Cross volunteers for their hard work and commitment to the humanitarian organization.
Agnes has been a volunteer in Cortland since March, working in the Red Cross office through the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP). A native of Syracuse, she recently moved to Cortland to be closer to her children. “I always wanted to volunteer and now I have time,” she said.
Agnes’ general duties include answering phones, filing paperwork, and “doing whatever needs to get done.” She was instrumental in running the Cortland office before a new manager was hired in July, and she shares receptionist duties with Nancy Albro, who was also named a Volunteer of the Month for September.
Nancy has volunteered with the Cortland Red Cross since the 1990s. Originally from Candor, she previously worked in the Registrar’s office at SUNY Cortland for 20 years. In addition to her receptionist duties at the Red Cross, Nancy volunteers for Red Cross Blood Services as a receptionist and recruiter for blood drives. She’s also on the Red Cross Disaster Action Team and responded to her first emergency during the recent flooding in Cortland, where she helped open the Red Cross shelter at the County Office Building.
When Nancy was born her mother needed a blood transfusion. From then on, her father always donated blood and her older sister taught her the importance of donating. “The Red Cross is a very worthwhile organization,” Nancy said. She wants to continue to help the Red Cross and RSVP, and learn more about disaster preparedness and relief.
Dunkin’ Donuts has generously supplied Red Cross offices throughout Central and Northern New York with gift cards to distribute monthly to deserving volunteers. Agnes and Nancy have received $25 gift cards as tokens of appreciation for their volunteer service.
