The American Red Cross office in Herkimer County will celebrate its recent move with an Open House and ribbon-cutting ceremony at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 3, at the new location at 420 E. German St., Suite 4, Herkimer.
The Red Cross moved from its previous location at 114 N. Prospect St, where it was located for about one year after several years at 235 N. Prospect St. The Red Cross is now in the same business office as the Herkimer County Chamber of Commerce.
The new office hours are flexible because the site will be used for Red Cross meetings, and as a location where people who have been displaced from their homes because of an emergency can meet with Red Cross volunteers to discuss the assistance they’ll receive from the Red Cross.
“We are proud of our long history in Herkimer County and we continuously look for ways to strengthen our local ties and enhance our services to residents,” said Jennifer Balog, Community Chapter Executive of the Red Cross Mohawk Valley Chapter. “We chose the German Street location because of accessibility as we’re now better positioned to work with our partners such as the Chamber of Commerce, fire and police departments, and various other agencies in Herkimer County.”
The Mohawk Valley Chapter, which covers Herkimer, Oneida and Otsego counties, has more than 60 Disaster Action Team (DAT) volunteers who are available to respond when there’s a fire, flood or another emergency in Herkimer County.
In 2012, Red Cross DATs responded to 30 fires and other emergencies in Herkimer County and provided food, clothing, lodging and other assistance to 45 people who were displaced from their homes.
Most recently, the American Red Cross opened a shelter at Herkimer County Community College for residents who had to be evacuated from their homes in the area of Main Street in Herkimer because of the standoff with the suspect from the March 13 fatal shootings. The Red Cross also provided mental health counseling and other support for residents affected by the tragedy.
Red Cross instructors will continue to teach CPR, first aid and other health and safety classes at the nearby Herkimer Area Resource Center at 350 S. Washington St. Blood donors can continue to donate at the Blood Donation Center in New Hartford, or at one of the many blood drives that are held regularly in Herkimer. Visit www.redcrossblood.org to find blood drives in the Herkimer area and call 1-800-RED CROSS to schedule an appointment.
