Annual Holiday Disaster Preparedness Event for Underserved Families

Long Beach - Clara's Project Kit
While the kids enjoyed their program, parents received a disaster preparedness presentation where they learned how to make an emergency kit, make a family plan and become more informed about disasters.

On December 8, The Greater Long Beach/Rio Hondo Chapter hosted its 15th annual Holiday Disaster Preparedness Event “Clara’s Kit”. The event, put on by the youth volunteers, is a holiday preparedness event for underserved families. Over 65 children and their families learned about the different types of disasters that can happen in our community and they learned how to make an emergency preparedness kit and a family plan.

The goal of the Holiday Preparedness Event was to teach kids all about disasters, how to be prepared, and also give them tools to start their own preparedness kits and it was a resounding success!! American Red Cross Youth volunteers provided interactive learning tools, a puppet show, skits and fun games for the kids to learn and practice safety and preparedness in the event of a disaster.

While the kids enjoyed their program, parents received a disaster preparedness presentation where they learned how to make an emergency kit, make a family plan and become more informed about disasters. At the end of the presentations the parents and their children were reunited to work on their family emergency plan together. Children were given a pillowcase donated by Disney as part of The Red Cross Pillowcase Preparedness Program – an initiative that eases children’s fears about disasters, emergencies and evacuations. By using the pillowcase a child can pack emergency kit items and their favorite item from home for easy transport in case of an emergency.
