The American Red Cross has served families in crisis for over 130 years. This year, our 7th Annual Heroes for the Red Cross fundraising campaign will honor everyday heroes who, like our founder, the legendary Clara Barton, serve families in need...down the street, across the country, and around the world.
During our Heroes for the American Red Cross fund raising campaign beginning during Red Cross month in March, we’ll be asking supporters of our mission to join together to raise critical funds for this great humanitarian organization that provides relief to victims of disasters and helps people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies. The Red Cross is not a government agency- we rely on people like you to support our mission to keep our communities resilient.
Every year the Red Cross responds to nearly 70,000 disasters—including approximately 150 home fires every day. More than 3.5 million people a year attend Red Cross disaster education presentations. More than 7 million people a year receive Red Cross training in first aid, water safety and other skills that help save lives. We teach emergency skills and give preparedness guidance to more than 15 million people a year via in-classroom training sessions as well as digital tools, such as apps, interactive web-based content, and downloadable resources.
Each year the American Red Cross collects more than 6 million units of blood from roughly 3.5 million volunteer donors. From these donations, the Red Cross distributes nearly 9 million blood products each year, including almost 6 million red cells, to patients at approximately 3,000 hospitals and transfusion centers across the country. Each year the Red Cross provides some 400,000 services to military members, veterans and civilians. Local Red Cross chapters brief more than 1 million people each year through the “Get to Know Us” outreach program. Each year, the American Red Cross helps reconnect more than 1,000 families separated by war and disaster around the world.
Last year alone, the Monroe County Chapter responded to a tornado, 3 multi-family home fires, and eighteen single family home fires, assisting a total of 38 families rebuild their lives after tragic loss. In addition, we assisted 176 military families and trained over 10,000 people in preparedness & health & safety services. We were blessed with 646 volunteers who joined with us to help their neighbors prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies in their own communities. In addition, the Red Cross hosted 185 blood drives in Monroe County and 3,736 pints of blood were donated in 2012.
