Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas today announced a unique partnership with the American Red Cross designed to assist Kansans during times of great need. A new Disaster Response Team, comprised entirely of BCBSKS employees, will respond when disaster strikes.
“Volunteerism is one of the great traditions of our company,” said Andrew C. Corbin, BCBSKS president/CEO. “The Disaster Response Team is a continuation of this tradition and allows our skilled employees to apply their time and talents to helping those affected by tragedy.”
This 29-member team will be called upon to respond to large scale disasters, such as flooding and tornados, in the BCBSKS service area. Team members must meet certain eligibility requirements including a willingness to make a two-year commitment and complete an American Red Cross background check. The Red Cross provided basic training for the team and will offer additional training when needed.
“We can develop Red Cross teams that are true collaborative partnerships and that provide a corps of community-based volunteers ready for when a disaster strikes,” explained Jim Allan, Red Cross board chairman. “Partnerships also help educate the community and spread the message of prevention before tragedy strikes."
Today’s announcement also included a $25,000 grant from the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas Foundation to the American Red Cross to assist with its mission of helping people during times of crisis.
