On May 8, 2013 the Cincinnati Area Chapter of the American Red Cross will joins hundreds of American Red Cross chapters throughout the United States and 185 other Red Cross and Red Crescent National Societies around the world in celebrating World Red Cross Day.
World Red Cross Day is celebrated each year, in honor of Henry Dunant, who founded the International Red Cross Red Crescent Movement nearly 150 years ago.
To commemorate this day, the Red Cross invites the Tri-State to celebrate World Red Cross day with an “Even Wars Have Limits,” presentation from the Cincinnati Area Chapter International Humanitarian Law (IHL) Action Peer Education Program. The presentation will be held at the Red Cross Headquarters/Disaster Operations Center (2111 Dana Avenue, Cincinnati, OH 45207) on May 8, 2013, from 7:00-8:30 P.M.
The International Humanitarian Law (IHL) Action Peer Education Program is a national American Red Cross initiative that has three goals: to increase young people’s knowledge of International Humanitarian Law, to influence young people’s attitudes, and to inspire them to take action and design their own IHL Action Campaigns. The aim is to teach youth that “Even Wars Have Limits” and to develop them into critical thinkers, problem solvers, and compassionate global citizens.
The Cincinnati Area Chapter is one of eight chapters in the country that participated in the International Humanitarian Law Action Campaign Pilot Program. High school and college students work in teams to create engaging and interesting ways to teach others about International Humanitarian Law and the laws of war. Students then put into action what they have learned in multiple demonstrations. One of these action campaigns will be presented as part of the Red Cross World Red Cross Day celebration.
To further inform the public about International Services of the American Red Cross, International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and the IHL Action Campaign, the Cincinnati Chapter will host an exhibit of art work and posters from May 6-10, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. at its HQ, 2111 Dana Avenue. The IHL Action Campaign Poster and Art Work Exhibit will be open to the public. For more information contact Dyah Miller either by phone at 513-579-3023 or by email at email@example.com.
