In partnership with AmeriCorps, the Red Cross in Utah is offering exciting opportunities to people interested in helping Utah build resilient communities through disaster preparedness education--all while earning money and an education award and gaining valuable real-world experience!

As a Utah Red Cross Peparedness and Response AmeriCorps program team member, you will play a vital role in helping Utah become more prepared over a 12-month period. In return for your service you will receive:

  • A $5,550 AmeriCorps Education Award that you can use toward college tuition (upon successful completion of service term commitment and 1700 hours of service--please note that this award can be gifted to a child or grandchild.)
  • A $12,100 Living stipend (before taxes) distributed evenly every two weeks throughout the one-year term of your AmeriCorps service
  • Hands-on, real-world experience with one of the most nationally and internationally-respected humanitarian service organizations (A HUGE plus for your resume!)
  • Free, in-depth training
  • You may also qualify for basic health insurance and subsidized childcare
  • There are currently several positions open throughout the state:

    Disaster Preparedness (8 positions – Ogden, Provo, Salt Lake City, St. George) Disaster Preparedness members are primarily responsible for educating community members in under-served populations in disaster preparedness education skills. Members will work with community organizations to arrange and lead disaster preparedness presentations as well as recruit volunteers from those groups who will help the member build community teams and further preparedness education in those neighborhoods.

    Masters of Disaster (1 position – Salt Lake City)

    This position will focus on the Red Cross Masters of Disaster program and educating school children (grades K – 8) on how to be prepared for disasters and make a plan with their family. This person will work closely with our partner Be Ready Utah to arrange presentations with schools as well as lead those presentations.

    Requirements

  • Commit to serve full-time for 1 year (October 1, 2013 – September 30, 2014)
  • Meet the 1700 minimum hours requirement (approx. 35-40 hours per week)
  • Be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident
  • Must be at least 17 years of age at the start of service
  • Have a valid Driver’s License & clean driving record
  • Pass required criminal background checks
  • Members should be comfortable working with a variety of people from all walks of life and backgrounds, and respect the Red Cross principles of neutrality and impartiality.
