It’s not every day an elf shows up at your door—let alone the leader of the Keebler elves.
Ernie (or Ernest J. Keebler, as he is formally known), recently visited American Red Cross national headquarters in Washington, D.C., to herald Keebler’s continuing in-kind donation of all cookies served at Red Cross blood drives.
As Ernie walked down the hall toward the Red Cross blood donation center, those nearby did a double take, and adults in business attire smiled and giggled like children.
Shaun Gilmore, president of Red Cross Biomedical Services, joined Ernie to visit those giving blood and thank them for their donation.
“I try to do my part to give back,” said W. Bryan McGill, who was in the middle of donating.
Those who had just finished giving blood got to enjoy some delicious Keebler cookies, some of them hand-delivered by Ernie himself.
The Red Cross has partnered for many years with the Keebler brand, along with its parent company Kellogg and its employees, to support local blood drives and other services. As a continuation of this relationship, in August 2011 Keebler and the Red Cross announced a partnership that aimed to help spread the word about how good it is to give blood.
Through the “Be a Good Cookie; Get a Good Cookie.” campaign, Keebler donated 6 million cookies a year for two years for Red Cross blood donor centers and blood drives. This in-kind donation provided a delicious post-donation treat for generous blood and platelet donors each day.
Ernie’s visit celebrated Keebler’s commitment to another two years of in-kind cookie donation, and rightfully earned him the honorary title of “Red Cross Cookie Chairman.” He couldn’t be more proud, as doing uncommonly good deeds is the basis of being a good Keebler elf.
The partnership between the Red Cross and Keebler is a natural fit. The gift of Uncommonly Good® cookies is a great way to recognize the 3.5 million Red Cross blood donors each year for their acts of kindness and generosity.
