The American Red Cross serving Greater Iowa offers a wide variety of volunteer training courses.

Once you have created your Volunteer Connection profile, we invite you to sign up for one of our orientation classes called Disaster Services: An Overview.

Below is a list of classes in your area for January – March 2014.

Disaster Services: An Overview (Provides an introduction to Disaster Services at the American Red Cross. The course introduces disaster preparedness and response, and provides an opportunity for chapters to customize the course with their local disaster program information.)

Client Casework (Trains Red Cross caseworkers on how to conduct effective client interviews and provide appropriate assistance to help meet a client's immediate disaster-caused or disaster-aggravated needs.)

Damage Assessment (The course introduces the tasks and responsibilities of Disaster Assessment responders on a disaster relief operation.)

Disaster Action Team Training (Provides guidance and procedures for DAT members to carry out the responsibilities of the disaster program in their chapter.)

ERV: Ready, Set, Roll (Provides participants with the opportunity to learn about and use an emergency response vehicle (ERV) and all related equipment.)

Health Services (Designed to orient licensed health professionals to the roles and responsibilities of a Disaster Health Services volunteer when working on behalf of the American Red Cross to meet the disaster-related health needs of clients. Course requires participants to apply their professional knowledge, experience and critical thinking abilities to the work-related challenges experienced by Red Cross workers who provide immediate assistance to clients in the aftermath of a disaster.)

Psychological First Aid (Provides a framework for understanding the factors that affect stress responses in disaster relief workers and the clients they serve.)

Sheltering Operations (Introduces the guidelines and procedures for setting up, running and closing a shelter during a disaster. Referencing shelter checklists, participants will work on a case study that takes them through four of the six phases of the Sheltering Cycle: Opening, Organizing, Operating and Closing)

All classes will be held at your local Red Cross office unless otherwise noted.
