Local Groups Help in Superstorm Cleanup

“The big thing is this all costs money. The only thing the Red Cross works on is donations.” - Paul Deis, Director of Emergency Services, American Red Cross Central Coast Region

Even before Superstorm Sandy began pummeling the Eastern Seaboard, Central Coast residents and members of the American Red Cross were on their way to help.

Eleanor Guzik, of Ventura, a disaster health services worker, and Kristiana Almeida, of Santa Barbara, a public affairs representative, reached the East Coast before the hurricane.

A third, Roberta Ainciart, of Santa Barbara, was grabbing her “go bag” last week for a trip to New Jersey, where the retired psychotherapist will help both victims and relief workers.

“We supply emotional support to victims and staff members because the storm and everything that follows can be overwhelming,” Ainciart said.
