A bimonthly update informing volunteers of the American Red Cross Grand Canyon Chapter.

VOLUNTEER AWARDS: The American Red Cross Grand Canyon Chapter is accepting nominations for the “Breakfast of Champions,” its volunteer recognition event that’s scheduled for May 11 at the Phoenix Zoo. Using the attached forms, you can nominate a Grand Canyon Chapter volunteer for one of eight awards – the Bill Bombeck Disaster Volunteer of the Year Award, the Clara Barton Volunteer Leadership Award, the Disaster Preparedness Award, the Good Neighbor Award, the Partnership Award, the Randi Knappenberger Exceptional Volunteer Award, the Rookie of the Year Award and the Youth Volunteer Award. Submit nominations to Nominations are due April 3, and award winners will be selected April 9. No late entries will be considered. HURRICANE SANDY UPDATE: In the four months since Hurricane Sandy made landfall, the Red Cross has served 13 million meals and snacks; distributed 7 million relief items; offered 112,000 health services and emotional support contacts; and made 18,000 outreach contacts with people about their recovery. More than 17,000 Red Cross workers, including 33 from the Grand Canyon Chapter, have supported the relief efforts.

CONTINUED RELIEF IN MISSISSIPPI: The Grand Canyon Chapter has deployed Fountain Hills resident Martha Iskyan to help provide relief for people affected by the tornado that struck Hattiesburg, Miss., earlier this month. Iskyan departed Feb. 26 as a mental health supervisor, on the heels of three recent deployments to the East Coast for Sandy. A retired psychologist, Iskyan has volunteered with the Grand Canyon Chapter since January 2012, and she previously volunteered with the Red Cross in Cincinnati.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport is seeking Grand Canyon Chapter volunteers for a disaster exercise from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 23. Volunteers will act as victims, and they’ll assist with rehabilitation and volunteer reception, among other functions. SUPPORT TEAM COOP: The Grand Canyon Chapter is offering a 15 percent discount on all health and safety classes to support KPNX-TV Channel 12 sportscaster Bruce Cooper, who recently returned to work after suffering a heart attack. MAKING A DIFFERENCE: The Red Cross, in coordination with Pitney Bowes, collected more than 1.2 million cards for U.S. service members, their families and veterans during the sixth annual Holiday Mail for Heroes program.
