The American Red Cross of Central and Northern Michigan is pleased to announce that Meijer has donated $500,000 to support Red Cross disaster relief efforts.

“The American Red Cross is very appreciative of this generous gift,” said John Cauley, Regional CEO for the American Red Cross of Central and Northern Michigan. “We’ve seen our own disasters recently with house fires and flooding. We’re very fortunate to have partners like Meijer who graciously support our disaster relief efforts on so many levels.”

Partnerships with other local emergency agencies, nonprofits, and committed financial partners like Meijer provide the crucial support that makes it possible for the Red Cross to deliver its services at no cost to the public. In addition to the $500,000 gift, Meijer provided warehouse space in Walker to the American Red Cross for emergency supply distribution during the West Michigan floods.

“Meijer understands how important it is to support the community where its customers and team members live,” Meijer Co-Chairman, Hank Meijer said. “We are pleased to partner with incredible organizations like the American Red Cross of Central and Northern Michigan that really go above and beyond to help those in need when disaster strikes.”

The American Red Cross responds to a disaster every 8 minutes. During the Michigan floods, the American Red Cross opened nine shelters. Of those, six were in West Michigan and stayed open for more than a week. More than 200 Red Cross workers served nearly 1,000 meals, snacks and distributed 1,020 clean-up kits, which include mops, buckets, shovels, gloves and other cleaning supplies.
