Niagara County students raise nearly $23,000 for American Red Cross

326 students from 10 different Niagara County schools recently hit the pool in support of the American Red Cross as part of the 31st Annual Swim-A-Cross fundraiser. The 2012 event, which took place at various times and locations over the past several months, raised a total of nearly $23,000 for the American Red Cross, Serving Erie & Niagara Counties.

“We can’t thank the students, their parents, the participating schools and their faculty, and the entire community enough for making this great event possible,” said Emily Shafer, Development Associate. “We hope each person that jumped into the Swim-A-Cross waters had a great time and knows how much their support means to the Red Cross and to their neighbors in need across Niagara County.”

Before hitting the water, swimmers collected pledges from friends and family for each lap they could complete. For the second consecutive year, Lewiston-Porter Intermediate School 4th-grader Emily Lauzonis finished as the top fundraiser, earning over $1,000 to support the American Red Cross. Along with Emily, Isabella Susino of Lew-Port Middle School and Ben Graham, II of Geraldine J. Mann Elementary each won gift certificates to the Niagara Falls Fashion Outlets for finishing among the year’s top three fundraisers, and the top three earners at each participating school brought home medals. Each swimmer that raised between $25-74.99 received a free t-shirt, while those raising $75 or more received a hooded sweatshirt, courtesy of the Lewiston Kiwanis Club, Olin Corporation, and D&T Graphics. This year’s shirts featured a “Swim-A-Cross” logo designed by Niagara Falls High School art student Adrianna VanHyfte.

In addition to all this year’s swimmers, their families and the Niagara County community, the Red Cross would like to recognize the faculty and staff at the following schools for helping organize Swim-A-Cross 2012 events:

  • 79th Street Elementary School
  • Cataract Elementary School
