Ohio National Guard Members Named 2013 Humanitarians of the Year

Ohio’s citizen-Soldiers -Airmen serving in the Ohio National Guard have been chosen to receive the 2013 American Red Cross Humanitarian of the Year award; an honor bestowed upon those who have improved lives in central Ohio and beyond.

Major General Deborah Ashenhurst, Ohio Adjunct General, will receive the award on behalf of the Soldiers and Airmen.

Organized by citizen-soldiers in 1788, the Ohio National Guard’s service to Ohio predates statehood and represents an un-paralleled legacy. The National Guard is the only branch of the military entrusted with the dual mission of protecting community and country. During emergencies, Guard units assist Ohioans endangered by storms, floods, fires and other disasters.

“The Soldiers and Airmen of the Ohio National Guard exemplify what it means to be an everyday hero,” American Red Cross of Central and Southeast Ohio CEO Matt Bertram said. “In the last year alone Ohio’s Soldiers and Airmen put their personal lives on hold to serve on the front lines of Afghanistan, repair schools and critical infrastructure for earthquake victims in Serbia, and when the windstorm struck central Ohio in June, they went door-to-door to check on the health and wellbeing of those left without power. We’re pleased to honor them as this year’s humanitarians of the year.”

The men and women of the Ohio National Guard join an outstanding roster of previously honored humanitarians:
