As NASCAR® driver Greg Biffle prepares for the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway over Memorial Day weekend, he also takes time out for another passion of his—helping save lives through blood donation.
The No. 16 Ford Fusion driver was among 92 people who rolled up their sleeve Wednesday on an American Red Cross donation bus at Roush Fenway Racing in Concord, North Carolina.
“There is no other feeling in this world than when you can help someone else in need,” said NASCAR® driver Greg Biffle. “I can donate blood and make a difference. Every two seconds someone in America needs blood, and your donation can help save up to three lives.”
One of those lives could be a loved one, friend or co-worker. A co-worker like Roush Fenway employee Rob DiFrank, who was a regular blood donor until he recently battled cancer. Hearing DiFrank’s experiences of receiving blood gave the act of donating even more significance to Biffle and the Roush Fenway team.
“I’ve known family members and others who have received blood over the years,” said Biffle. “Seeing Rob here today definitely makes it come full circle.”
“I was always proud to be able to donate, because I know not everyone can—but seeing all my co-workers donate today, really made me feel good,” said DiFrank. “Until you actually go through something as traumatic as I have, you have no idea how it could possibly help someone, and you never think that someone could be you.”
Biffle’s donation and Roush Fenway’s blood drive are part of the "Race to Donate" challenge. In all, there are six teams/racing companies hosting Red Cross blood drives this summer, a time where there is typically a drop in blood donations. "Race to Donate" challenge participants are Roush Fenway, Chip Ganassi, Stewart Haas, Michael Waltrip, Joe Gibbs and JHE Production.
Biffle, a Red Cross Celebrity Cabinet Member, challenges racing fans to join him in supporting the Red Cross by choosing a day to donate blood this summer.
“It’s something almost everyone can do, so please make an appointment today,” said Biffle
