The American Red Cross helped 14 families displaced by apartment fires in Peekskill and Yonkers Feb. 18.
The Peekskill fire at North Broad St. affected five households of 10 adults and 14 children. The Red Cross provided these families emergency lodging and worked with the Peekskill Office of Emergency Management (OEM) to help the families retrieve personal items from the property.
The four alarm Yonkers fire destroyed a building on Saratoga Ave., rendering nine families (29 people) homeless. The Red Cross worked with the Yonkers OEM to quickly open the Yonkers PAL as a possible shelter for those affected. Red Cross workers provided health services to family members and will continue to assist them with further services as necessary.
