The American Red Cross, Serving Erie & Niagara Counties responded to four separate fires this weekend, providing immediate emergency assistance including temporary housing, food, clothing and emotional support to 22 people affected by these fires.
Disaster Action Team (DAT) volunteers were first called to the scene of a large fire on Bailey Avenue in Buffalo Saturday evening. 11 people from three separate households were provided with temporary housing, food, clothing and mental health counseling. Late Saturday evening, volunteers provided vouchers for food and clothing to two people following a fire in Hamburg. Red Cross volunteers were called out again in the overnight hours, this time to provide assistance to four people following a fire on West Avenue in Buffalo. On Sunday DAT members responded to a call on Wade Avenue in Buffalo, providing food and temporary housing to a family of five. Red Cross case workers will continue work with all of those affected by this weekend’s fire activity to determine their needs and will continue to assist them moving forward.
The Disaster Action Team is a group of specially trained volunteers who respond to the scene of a local disaster when called upon 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
