Red Cross Celebrates a Year of Feeding the Hungry, Springfield

It is vital to our community and is the only meal delivery service in the area that offers special, dietary-specific meals to its clients

The American Red Cross Meals on Wheels program helps the homebound elderly, ill or handicapped people in our community remain independent in their own homes with the help of nutritious hot meals and a friendly visit from caring volunteers.

Since 1970, the American Red Cross Illinois Capital Area Chapter has provided central Illinois with its only nationally certified Meals on Wheels program. This service provides a low-cost/no cost meal delivery service to clients in Sangamon County.

“This program offers a diverse menu of healthy and nutritious meals, which are prepared at Memorial Medical Center,” said Colleen Stone, Chief Executive Officer. “It is vital to our community and is the only meal delivery service in the area that offers special, dietary-specific meals to its clients.”

Clients receive meals through this service on a daily basis. Last year, the local Meals on Wheels program served 207 clients and delivered over 20,920 meals.

During Red Cross Month, the Illinois Capital Area Chapter would like to recognize the volunteers and community partners that make this program possible, and also encourage more people to become involved.
