Howard Weitzman appreciates a helping hand.
As he stood in line for groceries on June 22, the Boxford man recalled his first experience with the American Red Cross.
“It was 1994 and there was an earthquake in California. Our building was tagged and my family was left homeless,” he said. “But the American Red Cross was there, and they gave us food and helped us out. You guys are always there, helping people out, and I appreciate that.”
Weitzman was one of nearly 200 veterans receiving food at a mobile pantry event in Lawrence, hosted by the Greater Boston Food Bank, the Department of Veteran’s Services and the American Red Cross of Eastern Massachusetts.
Volunteers from the agencies, as well as those from Bank of America, handed out produce, meat, snacks and iced tea to about 175 veterans.
The mobile food pantry is a combined effort to feed our veterans. The next event will be held this September in Brockton.
