Red Cross Helps as Iowa Rivers Overflow Their Banks
The American Red Cross is responding to significant flooding in several counties in Iowa after slow-moving storms dropped a lot of rain, causing rivers to overflow their banks.
More than 120 people spent Monday night in Red Cross shelters in Iowa. Red Cross workers are also providing meals and distributing relief supplies. The Red Cross is also helping to assess damage in the area.
Evacuations occurred in several parts of the state. In Butler County, residents were impacted by rising floodwaters along the Shell Rock River. People also had to leave their homes in Floyd and Linn counties because of the flooding. Residents of Cedar Rapids were also asked to evacuate where the Cedar River is expected to crest 12 feet above flood stage. Many homes are without power and gas and several highways and bridges are closed. At least 13 counties have been declared state disaster areas and residents in 5,000 homes near the Cedar River were asked to evacuate.
Meanwhile, Red Cross workers continue to respond to the devastating flooding which occurred more than a month ago in Louisiana. More than 230 people remain in shelters there and the Red Cross continues to provide meals, relief supplies and help people plan their next steps.
