Want to give back to your community or help others in need? The Red Cross of Greater Columbus is currently seeking applications for AmeriCorps Members to serve in communities across Central and Southeast Ohio. If you have ever dreamed about working for the Red Cross or helping victims of a disaster, this is the perfect opportunity for you!
Red Cross AmeriCorps service provides training and “real world” experience in public service, community outreach and nonprofit work. AmeriCorps members will learn disaster response and preparedness, community disaster education and volunteer recruitment. Participants may be able to do volunteer trips out-of-state after large-scale disasters.
“I’ve always had the spirit of wanting to give back,” said Tim Reichel, Red Cross AmeriCorps member. “I felt that through the AmeriCorps and the Red Cross that I could do that.”
The AmeriCorps program is perfect for recent college graduates or those considering a career-change. While recent grads and current Red Cross volunteers are encouraged to apply, we welcome all applications. AmeriCorps job titles include Readiness Specialist (training disaster volunteers), Client Caseworker (working with disaster victims), Community Disaster Education (teaching youth and adults about preparedness), Specialists for Services to the Armed Forces in casework, outreach and volunteer coordination (working with military members, their families, and the volunteer that support them).
If accepted to the program, you will receive a living allowance, health care coverage, free training and the Segal Education Award. The Segal Education Award, a $5500 grant, can be used to pay for the cost of university or to repay student loans. Some universities will even “match” the education award with scholarships or academic credit. Up to two Segal Awards per person can be granted.
AmeriCorps members can serve in the Ohio Counties of Athens, Crawford, Delaware, Fairfield, Fayette, Franklin, Knox, Licking, Marion, Muskingum, Pickaway and Ross. Applicants must be able to begin work in September 2013 and continue with the program through September 2014. More specific information and requirements can be found through 'our website'.
