Throughout the holiday season it is important to remember those who are service overseas and cannot be home with their loved ones.

Members of the American Red Cross Club from Francis Lewis High School in Fresh Meadows, Queens, and volunteers from Morgan Stanley came to Greater New York Red Cross regional headquarters in Manhattan Dec 13 for a Holiday Mail for Heroes card sorting event.

Holiday Mail for Heroes is a joint effort between the American Red Cross and Pitney Bowes that asks the public to create cards to brighten the holidays for the nation’s service men and women, veterans, and families of those fighting oversees military and veterans during the 2012 holidays.

The volunteers who came to Greater New York HQ read through nearly 5,000 cards and sorted them according to addressees: local service members, veterans and those service members deployed overseas.

David Galasso, co-chair of Morgan Stanley’s Veterans Network, said, “Throughout the holiday season it is important to remember those who are service overseas and cannot be home with their loved ones. Tonight’s event allowed us to, in a small way, give back to those brave men and women serving in our Armed Forces. Thank you, Red Cross, for allowing us to be part of your mission.”

In the upcoming weeks, members of the Greater New York Service to the Armed Forces Team will distribute these holiday cards to local military units, VA Hospitals, and other organizations that serve our local military and veteran’s community.
