In its eighth year, the primary fundraiser for the American Red Cross Midway-Kansas Chapter has steadily grown to become the largest poker run in the state of Kansas. In 2011, Ride for the Red hosted nearly 800 motorcycles and raised more than $60,000. This year, Red Cross looks to make it bigger and better.
On Saturday, June 16 at the American Red Cross Midway-Kansas Chapter, 1900 E. Douglas, nearly 1,000 motorcycles will converge to support south-central Kansas residents.
“It’s nothing short of spectacular to see motorcycles line Douglas and fill our parking lot,” said Bev Morlan, Midway-Kansas Chapter executive director. “Knowing they’re all there to support the American Red Cross is a perfect example of the compassion in our community.”
From 8 to 10 a.m., supporters will enjoy the morning with an all-you-can-eat breakfast of high-flying pancakes while admiring copious amounts of chrome that will fill the lot. They’ll then embark on a 100-mile round trip poker run that will take them through Wellington, Winfield, Douglas, Augusta and Andover to build a five-card poker hand that will be revealed to them at the final stop, Alefs Harley-Davidson in Park City at 2 p.m. The participant with the best poker hand will win the grand prize, a trip for two to Las Vegas.
“Red Cross works incredibly hard every day to make the people it serves completely satisfied, and Ride for the Red is no different,” Morlan said. “For only $20, there really is no better way a motorcyclist could spend a half day.”
For only $20, preregistration includes:
• a Ride for the Red T-shirt;
• an all-you-can-eat pancake and sausage breakfast;
• free ice-cold bottled water throughout the trip;
• and the chance to win a trip to Las Vegas, a getaway to Kansas City or a night on the town in Wichita.
Red Cross is also offering a Hall’s Angels VIP package. For $40, Hall’s Angels will receive:
• two poker hands (and two chances to win a trip to Las Vegas);
• a special Hall’s Angels shirt;
• an opportunity to win a Honda motorcycle;
• front-of-line service at breakfast;
• VIP parking;
• the opportunity to ride with Don Hall;
• and a bag of gift certificates and coupons.
To preregister for $20, participants can visit www.WichitaRidefortheRed.org or visit the Midway-Kansas Chapter between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. The cost increases to $25 the day of the event.
“In the last year, Red Cross has broken several service-delivery records, and fundraisers like Ride for the Red give our volunteers the financial power to help after disasters ranging from house fires to financial emergencies,” Morlan said. “Thanks to the participants of this event, Red Cross will help more than 80,000 people in south-central Kansas.”
