American Red Cross teams responded Thursday morning to a large fire that engulfed a 2-story apartment complex on Lakeview Avenue in Peekskill, N.Y. The 16-unit Hudson View Estates Apartments was home to 25 individuals, several of whom were home when the fire started shortly before 11am.
Red Cross volunteers set up a Reception Center at the nearby Peekskill Towers where local residents were offered emotional support, food and safe shelter. After determining residents’ needs, the Red Cross provided emergency housing to six of the affected families and funds for basic necessities such as food and clothing to 11 households.
In the days to come, Red Cross caseworkers will continue working displaced residents to meet any additional needs and advise them on next steps including long-term housing.
