SALT LAKE CITY – Salt Lake City, in partnership with the Salt Lake City School District and the American Red Cross Utah Region, will launch the Schools Aid Families in Emergencies (S.A.F.E.) Neighborhood Program to better prepare residents for a disaster. The program centers on training community members to open and operate American Red Cross-supported shelters at their local elementary schools following a major disaster.
The first two trainings will be held for Ensign community residents on April 17 at Ensign Elementary, 775 12th Avenue; and April 18 for Highland Park residents at Highland Park Elementary, 1738 East 2700 South. Both classes will run from 6–9 p.m. Subsequent trainings will be scheduled for other neighborhood school communities throughout the City.
“An estimated 30,000 to 60,000 people will be displaced in a 7.0 earthquake here in Salt Lake City,” said Mayor Ralph Becker. “We hope residents in each neighborhood school area will step forward to volunteer for training to help respond to their neighbors’ needs in times of disaster.”
In conjunction with the statewide Great Utah ShakeOut, a full-scale earthquake exercise on April 17, the S.A.F.E. Neighborhood Program trainings will prepare residents to open and operate Red Cross-supported shelters in their neighborhood schools as well as how to manage reunification, reception and evacuation efforts. Residents from local businesses, faith-based communities and the community at large are all encouraged to participate.
