NEW ORLEANS, LA. January 29, 2014 — The warming shelter in St. Tammany Parish at John Slidell Park is relocating in to nearby Community Christian Church located at 1460 Lindberg Drive in Slidell. The shelter will remain open until 8 a.m. Thursday. The American Red Cross, in coordination with parish officials, on Wednesday afternoon will close the shelters in Tangipahoa and Calcasieu parishes for residents who were unable to remain in their homes during this week’s ice storm.
“Many of the residents who stayed in the shelters have returned home, and there is no indication that additional sheltering is needed in Tangipahoa or Calcasieu parishes,” said Kay W. Wilkins, CEO of the American Red Cross South Louisiana Region. “We’ll continue to monitor the needs in our community, and our volunteers will continue to manage the shelter in Slidell.”
To ensure that residents had a warm place to stay if needed, the Red Cross in partnership with parish officials opened shelters at West Side Middle School in Amite (Tangipahoa Parish), Hammond Jr. High in Hammond (Tangipahoa Parish), Kentwood High School in Kentwood (Tangipahoa Parish) and Purple Heart Memorial Recreation Center in Lake Charles (Calcasieu Parish).
Fifteen residents stayed in those shelters and the Slidell Park shelter on Tuesday night. The Red Cross has worked closely with parish officials in managing those centers, as well as coordinated with state and other parish leaders on Red Cross preparations and response.
Anyone planning to evacuate to the Red Cross shelter in Slidell should bring essential items for each member of the family:
• Prescriptions and emergency medications
• Foods that meet unusual dietary requirements
• Extra clothing, pillows, blankets, hygiene supplies and other comfort items
• Supplies needed for children and infants, such as diapers, formula and toys
• Special items for family members who are elderly or disabled
