The Red Cross helps after March tornadoes

As people across the South and Midwest take stock of this week’s widespread tornado damage, the American Red Cross is providing shelters, food and emotional support across 11 states.

In Eastern Massachusetts, we have asked our volunteers to update their status should they are able to travel right now to those regions devastated by tornadoes. The American Red Cross is pulling trained volunteers from areas closer to the damage. However, we in Massachusetts realize we may be called to support our colleagues and are ready to go when called upon.

The Red Cross opened or supported 22 shelters around the nation to help people affected by the 95 confirmed tornadoes. Shelters were open Friday in Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Oklahoma, North Carolina, Alabama, Indiana, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia. Across the affected states, Red Cross volunteers are mobilizing to begin feeding operations and distribution of clean up and comfort supplies as it safe to do so. Red Cross health and mental health workers are also out in neighborhoods to help people cope with what they’ve seen and experienced.

This is a very large relief operation stretching from the Great Lakes to the Southeast and covers areas that were hit by tornadoes earlier in the week.

Some who people lost homes also suffered damage during the devastating tornado strikes last spring. Other areas such as Alabama are still recovering from a January tornado outbreak. This means that Red Cross mental health support will be an important part of the relief effort in these communities.

If you would like to help people affected by disasters like these tornadoes and storms, you can make a donation today to support American Red Cross Disaster Relief by visiting,
