FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE … (St. Johnsbury, VT – December 21, 2012) For some St. Johnsbury residents, the holiday season will be a lot tougher after an overnight fire at 1685 Breezy Hill Road displaced a family of two. Local Red Cross disaster services volunteers responded, meeting with the two residents to assess their emergency needs. Temporary lodging was arranged and some financial assistance provided to help with items lost in the fire.
The responding disaster services volunteers are part of a local Red Cross Disaster Action Team (DAT). There are twelve such Disaster Action Teams across the Red Cross region covering Vermont and 12 New Hampshire communities in the Upper Valley.
The Disaster Action Teams are comprised of volunteers who, when requested, provide client assistance for victims of disaster and can also assist first responders with rehabilitative services in the form of hydration and food, as other volunteers did yesterday at the scene of the granite warehouse fire in Barre. While traditionally assistance takes the form of lodging and financial assistance, the Red Cross caseworkers also provide referrals to additional local and state resources. Where needed, the Red Cross can also offer disaster mental health and disaster health services.
Red Cross volunteers come from many walks of life and receive the training necessary to assist in the wake of home and apartment fires, such as the one last night in St. Johnsbury, or to larger scale events such as a hurricane, winter storm or other natural or man-made disasters.
All emergency assistance provided by the Red Cross, as well as the training provided to our volunteers, is without charge.
