Volunteers deploy in hurricane relief effort

The American Red Cross of Eastern Massachusetts has deployed 17 people to affected areas in Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York and New Jersey, with plans to deploy more. It has also deployed two Emergency Response Vehicles to New York.

During the storm itself, the Eastern Massachusetts chapter opened nine shelters to accommodate people throughout the region, with locations at Durfee High School in Fall River, Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School, Nauset High School, Newbury Elementary, Sandwich High School, Weymouth High School, Chilmark Community Center, Lynn Classical High School and Williams Intermediate High School in Bridgewater.

Nearly 6,800 people spent Thursday night in 97 Red Cross shelters in 9 states – New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Maryland, Delaware, West Virginia and Ohio.
