Florence, CO, Thursday, October 25, 2012 – The American Red Cross evacuation shelter currently located at the First Southern Baptist Church, 303 E. 3rd St. in Florence, Colorado will remain open throughout the day today but will transition to a standby status by 8 p.m. this evening.
Putting the shelter in a standby status will allow the Red Cross to adjust the service delivery plan to better serve those affected by the Wetmore wildfire. In standby status the supplies of cots and other support items will remain in position at the shelter location but the location will no longer be staffed by Red Cross volunteers. If sheltering is required in the near future the shelter facility can be reopened quickly with many supplies already in place. “By moving into a standby mode we can release our volunteers to provide other services”, said Judy Navarro, Director for the Southeast Colorado Branch located in Pueblo. “We want to provide the best support possible and freeing up our volunteers will help make that happen”, she added.
The Red Cross volunteer opened the shelter in Florence Tuesday afternoon with a second shelter in Pueblo. The Pueblo shelter closed at 5:00 P.M. on Wednesday. Drawing Red Cross volunteers from Chaffee, Fremont, El Paso , Huerfano and Pueblo Counties to provide support.
