Your Gift Can Help Disaster Victims Overseas

Haiti Supplies make it possible for Red Cross workers to reach these remote destinations

The American Red Cross responds to disasters here in the United States as well as assisting at disasters all around the world.

People’s needs after a disaster can differ in other countries. Rural water supplies may be compromised. Transportation in some regions may be disrupted.

This year’s Red Cross Holiday Giving Catalog features items needed to provide assistance during an international disaster. Families in some countries need immediate help to get through those first weeks after something like a tsunami or earthquake. Emergency family kits will give a family a month of supplies like a cooking set, toilet paper, toothbrushes, water containers and blankets for a gift of $100.

Natural disasters abroad often disrupt a community’s water supply, leaving survivors in danger of dehydration and disease. For as little as $30, one catalog item which can help is an emergency water container to help families collect and store clean water. Bicycles help Red Cross volunteers travel roads impassable by cars and trucks. For a gift of $75, someone can support the cost of a bike and help make it possible for Red Cross workers to reach these remote destinations.

During the holidays, people can support the work of the Red Cross by supporting the 2012 American Red Cross Holiday Giving Campaign. One way to take part is to shop the Holiday Giving Catalog. Folks can purchase a variety of symbolic gifts featured in the catalog. Their purchases come with greeting cards they can send to a friend or loved one, letting them know a donation has been made in their name to the Red Cross.

The purchase of each symbolic catalog gift item is a tax-deductible contribution and provides support to the mission of the Red Cross. The catalog gifts are contributions toward a Red Cross program area, not a donation to a specific project or item.

The American Red Cross thanks everyone who has supported its disaster relief operations this year and is grateful to all those who will remember people in need this holiday season with a donation to the.
