No, that wasn’t on the dinner menu at the Red Cross San Gabriel Pomona Valley Chapter’s Centennial dinner celebration. Those products were born 100 years ago, the same year the Pasadena Chapter was founded.

Nearly 150 people were on hand to celebrate the Pasadena Chapter’s “Celebrations of Our Past 100 Years – Launching Our Next 100 Years,” Centennial event, on Sat., Nov. 15, at Pasadena’s University Club. The Red Cross Pasadena Chapter, which was chartered on November 14, 1914, was “organized in a time of peace to be ready in time of war.”

In his opening remarks, Ben Green, San Gabriel Pomona Valley (SGPV) Chapter CEO, said “In addition to highlighting some of our greatest accomplishments, we are here to honor our amazing volunteers and take a look forward to the next 100 years.”

Chuck Henry, co-anchor of NBC4 Southern California’s NBC4 News at 5 p.m., acted as the Master of Ceremonies for the celebration, which also was attended by Pasadena Mayor Bill Bogaard, numerous members of the SGPV board of directors, past and current members of the L.A. Region board of directors, members of the chapter’s Red Cross youth clubs and other friends of the Red Cross.

Special recognition was given to Bowen “Buzz” McCoy and the McCoy family, who have had an unprecedented commitment to the local Red Cross community.  Buzz is a lifetime member of L.A. Region Board of Directors, his father, Bowen McCoy, was the L.A. Chapter Manager from 1941 to 1970, and his mother, Berniece Hadley McCoy, was a former Red Cross employee and 50-year volunteer. With over 123 years of combined service to the American Red Cross, the McCoy family continues to exemplify the volunteer spirit of generosity and goodwill that allows the Red Cross to serve the community – here and around the world.

“Like many organizations, there are those who go way beyond the call of duty,” said CEO Ben Green. “We are blessed to have the McCoy family as an example of this dedication and commitment.”

Buzz McCoy, along with his daughter, Dr. Anne Bowen McCoy, accepted a plaque honoring the McCoy family from Chuck Wert, SGPV board member and Allen Mathias, L.A. Region lifetime board member.
