Their efforts raised over $30,000, which was presented to the Red Cross for recovery in the Philippines.

In the giving spirit of the holidays, Verizon and the Coalition of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment decided to forego their annual holiday party and, instead, redirect the money they would have spent to a fundraiser for Typhoon Haiyan relief. IW Group, a bi-coastal Asian/American advertising agency, also made a cash contribution in lieu of client gift giving.

CAPE, a non-profit organization in existence for 22 years, aims to improve the image of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders through entertainment and media education.

Their efforts raised over $30,000, which was presented to the Red Cross to provide aid to recovery in the Philippines.

CAPE Advisor Dean Devlin (producer of “Independence Day” and “Godzilla”) personally provided matching funds for monies raised at the event. In addition to Devlin, major contributions were made by Verizon, IW Group, business and entertainment leaders Albert Cheng, Leo Chu, Eric Garcia, Chris Lee, Peter McHugh, Karen Moy and Richard Sakai and noted director Ang Lee.

Serving on the committee for the fundraiser were Devlin, Peter McHugh, Fritz Friedman, Gene Eng, Asia Powell, Stephanie Pell, Ruben Nepales, actor Lou Diamond Phillips, Kevin Iwashina, Steve Tao, Bill Imada, Adele Yoshioka, Wenda Fong, and Jennifer Sanderson.

CAPE, Verizon, and IW Group also produced a public service announcement to assist in raising more funds. Lou Diamond Phillips appeared in the spot, which is currently airing on Verizon Fios and is expected to bring in more donations for Philippines Typhoon Relief.
