MLK Day Red Cross Volunteers Will Canvass to Prevent Home Fires

MLK Day Red Cross Volunteers Will Canvass to Prevent Home Fires
All through the holiday weekend, January 18-20, volunteers from the Los Angeles Region will take on this educational and training effort.

For the past five years, the Red Cross has devoted time and volunteers to honor Martin Luther King Day with an initiative to help prevent home fires in vulnerable neighborhoods. This nationwide initiative has been especially effective in Los Angeles, and this year the Red Cross Los Angeles Region will target an ambitious outreach to 10,000 homes in under-served and vulnerable areas of the city.

All through the holiday weekend, January 18-20, volunteers from the Los Angeles Region will again take on this educational and training effort, coordinating volunteers with workers for Red Cross Faith Based initiatives. They will canvass select neighborhoods, partner with faith-based organizations in various communities, and hand deliver vital fire safety information to 10,000 homes in Los Angeles.

Canvassing sites will be manned by teams of volunteers who will fan out, ring doorbells, distribute planning and prevention information and speak directly with home owners.

This year, the 99 cents Only Stores is making a generous contribution of snacks to the volunteers who join the outreach.

Locally, the Red Cross is partnering with three church groups who will all lend helping hands. They are: HOPE Worldwide in Gardena, Temple of Deliverance Ministry in Palmdale and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Lancaster.
