BRIDGEPORT, CONN., August 19, 2014 – The American Red Cross is helping 10 people – six adults and four children in five families after a fire today on Helen Street in Bridgeport. The Red Cross is providing help with emergency food and clothing needs as well as stuffed animal toys for the affected children.
Red Cross team members Kristen Binau, Gary Gerber, Steve Henderson, Tim Ryan and Mike Vincelli responded to assist the families and also spent several hours at the scene providing beverages and snacks to 100 first responders at the scene while they fought the fire.
Red Cross Emergency Services Senior Director Kristen Binau thanked a local McDonalds and BJ’s Wholesale Club for donations of food to support the canteen operation at the site. “We are grateful for the support of these businesses that helped us provide some refreshment to the people working so hard at this fire,” Binau said. “And I want to recognize the volunteers who spent several hours at the scene to work with these responders and to offer some comfort to the families displaced by this fire.”
The Red Cross is also providing comfort kits containing personal care items such as toothbrushes, deodorant, shaving supplies and other items a family might not have been able to gather in the rush to escape the fire.
