Joanie James joined the American Red Cross as a Disaster Responder in 2013 and has contributed roughly 750 hours of service thus far! She regularly makes herself available to respond to house fires in Baltimore City and County, but really shines when conducting follow-up casework. Since joining our case-management team in September 2014, Joanie has worked with more than 175 families in helping them develop and realize their long-term recovery goals after being affected by disaster. She gently and patiently works with clients during a very difficult chapter in their lives and motivates them to move forward. Joanie has also been instrumental in identifying and providing community resources to further assist clients in their recovery. In addition to disaster response and case management, Joanie also assists Pamela Evans, our Regional Disaster Mental Health Advisor, with administrative duties related to assigning the “emotional support cases” to our Disaster Mental Health teams across the Region.
As if that isn’t enough, Joanie recently accepted the volunteer leadership position of Recovery Support Specialist. In this role, she provides technical expertise, training, capacity building and implementation of recovery services throughout the Region. A natural leader, Joanie has already created a report to allow our caseworkers to more efficiently manage cases. She is also working to implement the IKEA Bedding & Linen Kit Pilot throughout the Region to ensure that clients have access to these bedding and linen sets.
As a retired IT Specialist and disaster response volunteer for the US Army Corps of Engineers, Joanie brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the American Red Cross and the families we serve. She is reliable, consistent and a true leader! We thank her for her service!
