The American Red Cross recently received a $100,000 grant from Motorola Solutions Foundation and a commitment from Motorola Solutions employees in Florida to support the Red Cross “Prepare Florida” effort. “Prepare Florida” is a landmark, statewide effort that is mobilizing communities to be better prepared in the face of disaster. This investment in community-based preparedness will empower people to take action before disasters strike and build Red Cross’ capacity to train and respond. Red Cross chapters throughout Florida are training communities to be prepared and engaging more people as the Red Cross increases both the tools and training that are needed to meet any disaster Floridians may experience.
“As a company we are dedicated to supporting the local communities in which we live and operate,” says Vice President and General Manger Latin America and Caribbean Region for Motorola Solutions Mike DeVente. “Having a strong Red Cross is critical to Florida particularly with the many diverse weather patterns that have the potential to impact people’s lives. We’re pleased to be able to help the Red Cross deliver public safety, disaster preparedness and quick-response services to people in need during hurricanes and throughout the year.” “Motorola Solutions Foundation is proud to join Motorola Solutions employees in helping make sure residents of Florida are safe and prepared” said Matt Blakely, Executive Director of Motorola Solutions Foundation.
Motorola is an active partner in the current Red Cross home fire preparedness effort to reduce home fire deaths and injuries by 25 percent in the next five years by getting people to take two actions, including 1) check their smoke detectors and 2) practice their fire escape plans with their families. Motorola’s commitment to offering opportunities for employees to be engaged and active in their communities shone brightly during recent events both canvassing vulnerable neighborhoods to increase fire safety knowledge and install smoke alarms and check or replace batteries.
“Motorola’s support is crucial for our state and the Prepare Florida effort, especially with hurricane season coming,” says American Red Cross Prepare Florida Chief Program Officer Katherine Boo Gonzalez. “This funding will help make sure the Red Cross is prepared to respond to community emergencies. It strengthens the preparedness of our entire population and, most importantly, it saves lives.”
