The American Red Cross will present its highest honor the Lifesaving Award of Merit to local 12-year-old Samuel Latham on Wednesday, April 8, 2015, at a Board of Directors’ meeting at 5 p.m. at the Red Cross Greater Orlando Chapter located at 5 N. Bumby Ave., Orlando, 32803. Samuel is being honored for utilizing the Red Cross lifesaving skills he learned during his last summer’s American Red Cross Junior Lifeguarding training when his father experienced a serious medical emergency while driving from Tampa to Orlando last year.
The Red Cross Lifesaving Award of Merit is given to an individual(s) who voluntarily uses his/her skills and knowledge learned in an American Red Cross health and safety course to save or sustain a life. The award bears the signature of the President of the United States.
Having all family members trained in lifesaving skills is important to help each other and potentially the life of a stranger. The Red Cross Greater Orlando Chapter trained more than 18,500 people last year in lifesaving skills, such as CPR, first aid and the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED). “Don’t wait until after an emergency to learn these vital lifesaving skills. The life you save may be that of a family member or friend,” says Katherine Boo Gonzalez, executive director, American Red Cross Greater Orlando Chapter.
The Red Cross offers courses in adult and pediatric CPR, first aid and AED skills, as well as babysitting courses, advanced childcare training, training for professional first responders, pet first aid, workplace safety training, aquatics and others.
