Northwest Georgia Red Cross Supports Area Warming Shelters

With subzero temperatures and wind chill advisories in effect for our area, we want to make sure everyone has a chance to stay warm.

ROME, Tuesday, January 7, 2014- As temperatures dropped to record lows in many parts of Georgia, Northwest Georgia Red Cross volunteers mobilized to provide warming shelters to those seeking refuge from bitterly cold temperatures and biting winds. The Northwest Georgia Red Cross is currently operating or supporting warming shelters in five counties. The shelters will be open through Jan 8th at noon. At the shelter there will be cots, blankets, food, beverages and comfort. “Many Georgians have never experienced dangerously cold, life-threatening weather ” said Jeffrey Putnam, executive director of the Northwest Georgia Red Cross, which serves, Bartow, Catoosa, Chattooga, Dade, Floyd, Gordon, Murray, Polk, Walker and Whitfield Counties “With subzero temperatures and wind chill advisories in effect for our area, we want to make sure everyone has a chance to stay warm”. Gordon County - East Calhoun Church of God, 401 Peters Street, Calhoun, GA - Partner warming shelter managed by Red Cross

Floyd County - Salvation Army Emergency shelter, East 2nd Ave., Rome GA - Partner warming shelter

Polk County (call 911 for assistance) - Goodyear Civic Center, 100 Pryor Street, Cedartown, GA - Partner warming shelter with Red Cross equipment support

Bartow County (call 911 for assistance or transportation) - Houston Suggs Youth Recreation Facility, 31 Beavers Dr NW, Cartersville, GA - Partner warming station with Red Cross equipment support

Whitfield County - North Georgia Agricultural Fairgrounds, 500 Legion Drive, Dalton, GA - Partner warming shelter with Red Cross equipment support
