The American Red Cross Service to the Armed Forces Department works diligently on a daily basis to support service men and women, and their families, during the start of service, their active service, and when military service ends. Recently, the Greater Chesapeake Region was able to help a member of the military whose son has cerebral palsy and would benefit from the installation on a wheel chair ramp at their house. The Greater Chesapeake Region partnered with the Home Depot and made that need a reality.
"I am writing to express my infinite gratitude for the benevolence the American Red Cross displayed to my family and me. My family and I were in need of a wheelchair ramp for our sixteen-year-old son, Jeremiah, who has cerebral palsy. He is non-ambulatory and, as such, confined to a motorized wheelchair. We did not know who or where to turn for assistance. My family and I researched several agencies to no avail.
We discovered that the American Red Cross might be able to help us. We reached out to the American Red Cross for their assistance and within days we received an email stating that they, along with Home Depot, were willing to assist us. We were much relieved and elated that the American Red Cross was able to assist with making our home accessible to Jeremiah. The American Red Cross coordinated with Home Depot to visit our home to assess the specifics for our son’s wheelchair ramp.
The Home Depot staff came to our home to get the location and measurements of the installation of wheelchair ramp. Once completed, the Home Depot staff and volunteers came back at a later date to build and install the wheelchair ramp. We are much impressed with and grateful for the knowledge, expertise, and professionalism of the Home Depot staff. We are also grateful for the selfless service of the volunteers. These remarkable men and women did a phenomenal job!
The caliber of their work is of the highest quality. The installation was completed in a timely manner on a very frigid day. Notwithstanding the frigid temperatures, the workers labored diligently to bring this project to consummate completion, which is manifested in the finished product.
When Jeremiah saw the wheelchair ramp he was absolutely ecstatic. This was one of the happiest days of his life. The look on his face was priceless! Without the quick response and compassion of the American Red Cross, the installation of the wheelchair ramp would not have come to fruition. My family and I, especially Jeremiah, are forever grateful."
