Red Cross volunteers in Umatilla County spent their weekend running an outreach booth at the first annual hosting of the Firefighter Combat Challenge. Held in Pendleton for the first time, the SCOTT Firefighter Combat Challenge® is an event that seeks to encourage firefighter fitness and demonstrate the profession's rigors to the public. Obstacles include climbing a 5-story tower, hoisting, chopping, dragging hoses and recuing a life-sized 175 “victim.”
Red Cross Readiness Specialist Kymberli Peterman led a team of eight local volunteers to host a table and perform other volunteer functions for the event. According to the Peterman, volunteers handed out 100 English-version Together We Prepare booklets and 20 color sheets to children on Friday, and 150 English-version Together We Prepare booklets on Saturday as well as 75 Spanish versions and 30 color sheets to children.
“This event and the fabulous help from the volunteers placed Red Cross in good standing with not only the community and both fire departments, but the event staff and coordinators,” Peterman said. “We have already been invited back to the second annual event next year, and have been asked to assist in the planning of the event.”
