Red Cross Encourages Sober Driving and Safety on Labor Day
Before you head out to the river or the pool one last time or join your friends at an area bar, the American Red Cross asks that you take a moment to ensure you’re heading in a safe direction.
People all across Central Illinois are planning grand ways to say their goodbyes to summer during Labor Day weekend. Before you head out to the river or the pool one last time or join your friends at an area bar, the American Red Cross asks that you take a moment to ensure you’re heading in a safe direction.
If you are heading out of town or to enjoy the last bit of summer sun:
Keep a kit within reach. You should always have a first aid kit in your home, by the pool, and in your car.
You’re ready – but is your car? Don’t wait for a rattle or a warning light to find out your car isn’t up for the trip. Be sure to have brakes, tires, oil and fluids checked before taking to the roadways.
Don’t keep your plans to yourself. It’s important to share your travel plans with family and friends. Let them know the dates you plan to travel and the location of where you’re staying.
Play it safe under the sun. Always wear sunscreen when outdoors. Make sure everyone wears a hat to shield direct sunlight. Keep enough water for everyone to drink throughout the day.
Enjoy water the safe way. Now is not the time to forget about the rules of water safety. Never swim alone, only swim in supervised areas, enter water feet first, and don’t mix alcohol with swimming or boating.
If you are heading out to celebrate the end of summer with alcoholic beverages, please be sure to designate a sober driver. The American Red Cross, IDOT and Baumgarten Distributing are teaming up with local bars to offer free nonalcoholic beverages to designated drivers on Labor Day.
WHEN: Monday, September 2, 2013 – all day
WHAT: At participating locations, designated drivers can enjoy free nonalcoholic beverages in special “This is MY Red Solo Cup” cups and they will also receive a designated driver pin.
