The Alabama Red Cross continues to help people across the state due to the aftermath of tornadoes and flooding that occurred during the holidays. Red Cross relief efforts continue this week as people continue the monumental task of cleaning up their homes and neighborhoods and start to get on the road to recovery.
In Coffee, Houston, Geneva, Dale, and Pike Counties, Red Cross volunteers have distributed meals and relief supplies such as brooms, buckets, gloves, shovels, rakes and tarps. Those seeking assistance can meet with Red Cross caseworkers at 1004 Montezuma Ave, Dothan as well as the Samson Public Library. The regular hours of operation for this location are Monday through Friday 8:30am to 3:00pm.
The following services have been provided to residents in the Wiregrass Area since the storms rolled through Christmas Day.
- More than 3,218 meals and 5,497 snacks have been served
- More than 175 comfort kits, containing personal hygiene items, have been distributed
- More than 2,869 clean-up items, like rakes, shovels, bleach, have been distributed
- Two (2) shelters have been opened with a total of more than 123 shelter overnight stays
- Three hundred and twenty (320) clients have been served in client casework
The Red Cross will continue to be on the ground for weeks supporting those affected. As people begin to recover from the storm, Red Cross workers will join with local community partners to provide additional services. For example, in some areas the Red Cross will help to open community resource centers bringing all of the organizations and agencies together in one convenient location to help those affected. Red Cross caseworkers will also meet one-on-one with people to create recovery plans, navigate paperwork and locate help from other agencies.
