Disaster Responders Wanted in the Mid Hudson Valley

User News Image

Have you ever considered joining the American Red Cross as a volunteer disaster responder?

This January, the American Red Cross of the Mid-Hudson Valley will hold a free, two-day training session - better known as Disaster Responder Boot Camp - to introduce prospective volunteers to the wide array of Red Cross disaster services available in Ulster, Dutchess, Greene and Columbia counties. In one weekend, boot camp participants will become registered Red Cross volunteers and will complete all of the on-boarding and training necessary to begin responding to disasters such as home fires in their local communities.

Current Red Cross volunteers can sign up by visiting the Disaster Training shift tool on Volunteer Connection and registering for each training course listed on the calendar for the weekend of January 9 and 10.

New and prospective volunteers should contact Lauren Whitman at (845) 471-0200 or email lauren.whitman@redcross.org to sign up or request more information.

What to expect

Day One of the Disaster Responder Boot Camp will begin with an orientation session for new and prospective volunteers. The day will continue with training for all participants, to cover Red Cross Disaster Cycle Services and Disaster Action Teams. As Disaster Action Team trainees, boot camp participants will be able to provide assistance such as temporary shelter, food, clothing and emotional support to victims of local home fires and other emergencies.

On Day Two, participants will be trained in Shelter Fundamentals to be able to provide Red Cross services during large-scale disasters.

Requirements

Red Cross disaster services volunteers must be at least 16 years old with a cell phone, email address, driver’s license, reliable transportation and the flexibility to respond to local disasters during assigned on-call shifts. No prior experience is necessary. Anyone with the desire to help their neighbors when they need it most is encouraged to join. All training, including the two-day Disaster Responder Boot Camp, is provided free of charge.
