The American Red Cross of the Southern Tier, in coordination with AmeriCorps, will be visiting mobile homes in Waverly to install free smoke alarms and provide home fire prevention and safety information to residents. The community event is scheduled for Saturday, July 16 beginning at 10 a.m.
Volunteers will start at the Cedar Terrace Mobile Home Park on Dodge Avenue, and then move on to the Wagon Wheel Mobile Home Park on Pembleton Place.
As part of its Home Fire Campaign, the Red Cross has been joining with community groups and fire departments nationwide to install free smoke alarms in homes that need them. The initiative is aimed at reducing the number of deaths and injuries caused by home fires by 25 percent over the next few years. The Red Cross is asking every household to take two simple steps: check their existing smoke alarms and practice fire drills at home.
In the past twelve months, the Southern Tier Chapter installed more than 750 smoke alarms. In addition to Tioga County, the chapter serves Broome, Chenango and Tompkins Counties.
