As a new Tiffany Circle member and an American Red Cross Board Member serving King County, I wanted to tell you of my personal experience with a project I participated in recently in the Rainier Beach area. As part of the Home Fire Preparedness Campaign, the Red Cross teamed up with the Seattle Fire Department and community volunteers, going door-to-door with the purpose of educating the public about fire safety. Tiffany Circle member, Andy Schneider, along with her daughter Peyton, helped lead the way in this effort that was spearheaded by Tiffany Circle members. In total, 24 volunteers in addition to 4 firefighters and our AmeriCorps team participated in the event. Together we visited over 100 homes, had 59 preparedness conversations and installed 46 smoke alarms. This was the American Red Cross in action and I was thrilled to be a part of the event!
I was especially touched by a woman who invited us into her 100+ year old home. She had been ill for the past year and it was clear that our presence was a big relief. We were able to install smoke alarms on all levels of the home including the upstairs where another adult had been living in very tough conditions. I think we all felt better knowing that this woman had those extra protections that we were able to provide.
Through all the meetings and activities with the Red Cross over the years, this was one that really showed me the personal humanity that we care so much about. I hope that you all have the opportunity to have a similar up-close experience with the Red Cross.
