While earthquakes may not be an everyday concern for most Massachusetts residents; according to the United States Geological Survery 19 earthquakes of a magnitude V or greater have centered in our state and several earthquakes off the Coast and in Canada have affected our state since the first explorers and settlers began recording data during the 17th century.
While earthquakes are still uncommon, at the Red Cross our mission is improving preparedness. We want everyone to understand what to do during an earthquake whether they are home or abroad! For example, a common myth is that the best place to be during an earthquake is beneath a doorframe, yet studies show that doorframes are no stronger than any other part of the structure!
If you ever find yourself in an earthquake, don't freak out! Follow these 3 steps instead:
1. Drop to the floor.
2. Find cover underneath a sturdy piece of furniture.
3. Hold on to that piece of furniture.
You can also download our free Earthquake App from either the Apple App Store or Google Play! This wonderful app is full of useful tips and information about how best to prepare for, and act during an earthquake.
To help spread awareness the American Red Cross of Massachusetts will be participating in the Great NorthEast Shakeout on Thursday, October 16th, at 10:16, and we invite everyone to join us in the world's largest earthquake drill!
