The American Red Cross of West Michigan is pleased to announce that the Region 3B Area Agency on Aging covering Barry and Calhoun Counties has provided a grant to the Red Cross for $25,419.

The grant will help the Red Cross of West Michigan provide transportation services to older adults in Barry County for a three-year period beginning in October of 2013. Initially the Red Cross requested a $15,000 grant, but the Area Agency on Aging recommended a level higher than proposed.

“We are pleased to be able to fund the American Red Cross to provide transportation to seniors in Barry County,” said Karla Fales, CEO of the Area Agency on Aging, Region 3B. “The Request for Proposal committee felt compelled to provide some additional funding beyond what was requested in order to ensure our Red Cross partners can meet the needs in the more rural areas of Barry County. We know how important transportation is for helping seniors stay active, healthy, and engaged in their community.”

Senior Transportation Services is unique to the Red Cross of West Michigan, and includes programs in Kent, Barry, and Muskegon Counties. In 2012, volunteer drivers in these areas transported more than 1,850 people and traveled nearly 600,000 miles, enough to go around the world 24 times.

“We are so appreciative of our supporters and community partners like the Area Agency on Aging,” said Sam Tidwell, Regional CEO for the Red Cross of West Michigan. “Their generous contributions will help save lives as it allows our volunteer drivers to get senior citizens with serious health conditions to their crucial appointments.”
