Since December, the number of fire incidents has increased in Monroe County and the American Red Cross has been there to ensure that people in the community are getting the assistance they need.
The Monroe County Chapter’s disaster action team has responded to14 fire incidents in the past two months, providing food, clothing and shelter to 19 families. Last year alone the chapter responded to 16 fire incidents.
In times of disaster, the Red Cross is there to assist affected residents with their immediate needs. Assistance in the way of food, clothing and shelter is typically provided.
Red Cross volunteers on the scene are members of the Red Cross Disaster Action Team, a group of specially trained volunteers who respond to the scene of a local disaster when called upon at any time of the day or night.
The disaster action team has also been keeping busy providing canteen services to 170 emergency responders in the past two months.
The Red Cross often supports first responders at the scene of a disaster by providing canteen services such as food, snacks and other necessities to help during long response hours.
The Monroe County Chapter’s Chief Executive Officer, Laura Pipis, said, “Responding to disasters is our main priority so sometimes other things have to wait because we have to be ready to respond at a moment’s notice.”
In addition, she added that the best part about providing assistance is to know we are able to make a difference in someone’s life, and help provide people with safe and affordable shelter.
Pipis said, “It is such a joy for me to see how much joy Red Cross volunteers receive from helping others.”
